Cherry Creek High School’s Austen Mazenko won top honors among 157 competitors in the 36th Soifer Mathematical Olympiad.

He was recognized at the awards ceremony May 3 in Berger Hall.

Mazenko previously placed third at the 2016 and 2017 Olympiads. He was awarded the top prize by a panel of judges for his responses to five problems and his essay-style responses within a four-hour time limit.

Mazenko received an Olympiad Gold Medal, a $1,000 scholarship to attend any accredited American university of his choice, a $2,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship (to be awarded if attending UCCS as a new freshman), Springer Publisher book “The Mathematical Coloring Book: Mathematics of Coloring and the Colorful Life of Its Creators” by Alexander Soifer, Casio graphing calculator and the Wolfram Research software “Mathematica” download.

The Olympiad featured 157 students from 27 cities across Colorado for the competition April 26. A panel of judges selected the first, second, third and fourth prize winners, along with first and second honorable mentions.

Second prize was awarded to three students:

  • Kyle Wang, sophomore, Fairview High School
  • Quinn Perian, freshman, home school
  • Rahul Thomas, sophomore, Cherry Creek High School.

Each of them will receive an Olympiad silver medal, a $250 scholarship to attend any accredited American university of his choice, a $2,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship (to be awarded if attending UCCS), Springer Publisher book “The Mathematical Coloring Book: Mathematics of Coloring and the Colorful Life of Its Creators” or “The Scholar and the State: In Search of Van der Waerden” by Alexander Soifer, Casio graphing calculator and the Wolfram Research software “Mathematica” download.

Third prize was awarded to Ellie Greyson, freshman, Cherry Creek High School. She will receive an Olympiad bronze medal, a $2,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship (to be awarded if attending UCCS as a new freshman); a Springer book, Alexander Soifer’s book “Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics,” Casio graphing calculator and the Wolfram Research software “Mathematica” download.

Fourth prize was awarded to three students:

Alexander Soifer, professor of interdepartmental studies, presented solutions to the Olympiad’s problems and his lectures “Four Etudes in Mathematical Coloring” and” Charge to the Olympians: A Tale of Big Man and Little Bird.”

Support for the prize funding and the operation for the Olympiad was provided by Colorado Springs School District 11, Air Academy School District 20, Springer Publisher, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, Greg and Mary Hoffman, Robert and June Ewell, UCCS Chancellor, UCCS Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, UCCS Dining and Hospitality Services, UCCS Bookstore, UCCS Parking and Transportation Services, Colorado Governor’s Office, U.S. Senator Cory Gardner, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers and Alexander Soifer.

In the 36 years of the Soifer Mathematical Olympiad, some 20,000 students have participated during 1984-2019. They have written approximately 97,000 essays and were awarded more $433,000 in prizes. The Olympiad is a unique joint effort of school districts, schools, industry, University of Colorado, and city, state and federal governments.

 

For the first time in the thirty-two year history of the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, a middle school girl earned first prize in the competition.

Sara Gao, grade 8, from Campus Middle School in Englewood was one of four first prize winners of the April 24 competition that brought 328 middle and high school students from throughout Colorado and from an Alabama school to UCCS. She became the first female to earn first prize. Award winners were announced at a May 1 ceremony.

Other first prize winners were:

  • Rodion Kosmin, grade 12, Castle View High School, Castle Rock. Kosmin is visiting from Ukraine. 
  • Avi Swartz, grade 10, Cherry Creek High School, Englewood

First prize winners will receive a gold medal, a $500 scholarship to attend any accredited U.S. university, a UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship, “The Scholar and the State: In Search of Van der Waerden” by Alexander Soifer, a Casio graphing calculator, and a Wolfram Research software Mathematica. “Middle school girls and boys have never before achieved so much,” Alexander Soifer, professor, Interdepartmental Studies and CMO director, said. “They competed as equals among the senior high students. This is unprecedented and shows their potential in the years ahead.”

Students from Colorado cities of Aurora, Boulder, Broomfield, Castle Rock, Centennial, Colorado Springs, Denver, Englewood, Greeley, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Lone Tree, Longmont, Monument, Parachute, Superior, and Rangely participated. The competition also drew contestants from Alabama School of Mathematics and Sciences, Mobile, Ala. The students were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions.

Second prize winners were:

Colorado Springs Second prize winners will receive a silver medal, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship, “The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: From the Mountains of Colorado to the Peaks of Mathematics” by Alexander Soifer, a Casio graphing calculator, and a Wolfram Research software Mathematica.

The third prize winner was: 

  • Amy Wang, grade 10, Pine Creek High School, Colorado Springs

She will receive a bronze medal, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship; a book from Springer Academic Publishing, a Casio graphing calculator, and a Wolfram Research software Mathematica.

This is the second consecutive victory for Zhang. He won first prize in the 2013 competition.Second Prize. On April 26, 2013, Colorado treated the XXX Colorado Mathematical Olympiad to Colorado blue skies. The 257 Olympians came from all over Colorado: Aurora, Boulder, Castle Rock, Centennial, Colorado Springs, Denver, Fort Collins, Greenwood Village, Holyoke, Highlands Ranch, Manitou Springs, Lakewood, Louisville, Monument, Parachute, Parker, Rangely, Rush, Parachute, Pueblo, Woodland Park, and Yoder. Once again we had participants from the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, Mobile, Alabama, who earned their trip to our Olympiad by winning their local mathematics competition.

The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions.

First prize was awarded by the judges to Albert Soh, a junior, and Jesse Zhang, a sophomore, both from Fairview High School of Boulder, CO. Each will receive a Gold Medal of the Olympiad, a $750 Scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship, Casio Prism Calculator; a Wolfram Mathematica for Students Download, The Mathematical Coloring Book: Mathematics of Coloring and the Colorful Life of Its Creators by Alexander Soifer; and an Olympiad-related book by Springer. He will receive a silver medal of the Olympiad, a $1000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship, Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort Hotel 3-day 2-nights gift certificate; Casio Prism Calculator; a Wolfram Mathematica for Students Download, The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: From the Mountains of Colorado to the Peaks of Mathematics by Alexander Soifer; and an Olympiad-related book by Springer.

Third prizes were awarded to Jeremy Schiff, a freshman from Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, CO; and Sisi Peng, a sophomore from Rampart High School in Colorado Springs, CO. Each will each receive a bronze medal of the Olympiad, a $1000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship; Casio Prism Calculator; a Wolfram Mathematica for Students Download, The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: From the Mountains of Colorado to the Peaks of Mathematics by Alexander Soifer; and an Olympiad-related book by Springer.

175 Middle and High School students from around the state and as far away as Alabama participated in the XXVII Colorado Mathematical Olympiad on Friday, April 23, 2010 here at UCCS.

The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions. In the 27 years of Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, close to 17,000 students have participated during 1984-2010. They have written over 85,000 essays, and were awarded some $270,000 in prizes. The Olympiad is a unique joint effort of school districts, schools, institutions of higher education, business community and local and State governments.

Second prize was awarded to Christopher Guthrie, a junior from Fairview High School of Boulder, CO.

Third prizes were presented to three Olympians: Margaret Koehler, a senior from Lewis-Palmer High School in Monument; David Wise, a junior from The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs (he was second prize winner last year); and Ben Alpert, a junior from Fairview High School in Boulder (he was fourth prize winner last year).

The judges have awarded first place to Sam Elder, a junior from Poudre High School, Fort Collins. He will receive a gold meda of the Olympiad, a $1,200 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCS Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO Graphing Calculator, CASIO Watch, CASIO ClassPad 300, Wolfram Research’s Mathematica 5.2 software, and Wolfram Research’s Crystal Star Necklace.

For the second time in 24-year old history of the event, the winner solved completely “The Famous Five” problems of the Olympiad. Both times it was achieved by Sam Elder, in 2006 and 2007. He was second behind Mark Heim in 2005.

Second prize will be awarded to Hannah Alpert, a senior from Boulder’s Fairview High School in Boulder. She will receive a silver medal of the Olympiad, a $900 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancelor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO Graphing Calculator, CASIO Watch, CASIO ClassPad 300, Wolfram Research’s Mathematica 5.2 software, and Wolfram Research’s Crystal Star Necklace. Hannah was also second last year, and third the year before.

In vew of dramatic distance in success between the top two Olympians and the rest, the judges decided not to award a third prize this year.

Fourth Prize will be presented to the following 6 Olympians: Alex Petterson, Sophomore, Ft. Sam Elder of Fort Collins solves “The Famous Five” and Wins Gold Medal in the 23rd Colorado Mathematical Olympiad:

This is Sam’s first victory but he was second last year. The XXIII Annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad (CMO-2006) took place on April 21, 2006. It brought together some 450 middle and high school students from all over Colorado: Denver, Calhan, Grand Junction, Rangely, Aurora, Bailey, Manitou Springs, Cheraw, Parker, Highlands Ranch, Calhan, Boulder, Englewood, Loveland, Falcon, Woodland Park, Monument, USAF Academy, and Colorado Springs. The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present complete essay-type solutions.

The judges have awarded First prize to Sam Elder, a sophomore from Poudre High School of Fort Collins. He will receive a gold medal of the Olympiad, a $1,200 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO “Super-Calculator” Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, Complete set of 4 books by Alexander Soifer, a major Wolfram Research’s software, A Wolfram T-shirt, and City of Colorado Springs memorabilia. Mark Heim and Hannah Alper were the only Olympians who solved problem 4(b). Moreover, they found solutions not known to the judges. Mark, in fact, proved a much stronger result than the problem required.

He received a gold medal, a $2,000 scholarship at any U.S. college or university, a $1,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship from CU-Colorado Springs, a Casio “super calculator” Classpad 300, Wolfam Research’s software “Mathematica”, and “Geometric Etudes Combinational Mathematics”, a book written by Vladimir Boltyanski and Alexander Soifer, professor of mathematics and the Olympiad’s organizer.

Heim is a repeat winner of the Olympiad.

UCCS Chancellor Pamela Shockley has instituted “Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists” effective with last year’s Olympiad. Each gold, silver and bronze medallist has been awarded $1000 Chancellor’s Olympiad Medalists Scholarship, effective upon application and acceptance to CU-Colorado Springs as a new freshman. This year the Chancellor’s offer has amounted to a $5,000.

In the year 2000 Bryce Herdt received the Olympiad’s Young Mathlete Award: then 7th grader, he achieved the highest result among middle school contestants. This time Bryce will receive the highest award of CMO, First Prize. Bryce Herdt is now an 8th-grade student in a class of Mrs. Loretta Chandler in Irving Middle School of District 11 of Colorado Springs. He is the youngest ever First Prize winner in 18 year history of CMO. He will receive a gold medal of the Olympiad, software MATHEMATICA donated by Wolfram Research from Silicone Valley, a graphing calculator donated by CASIO, the set of 4 books by Alexander Soifer, and a $2,000 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four year college.

Second prize will be awarded to Mark Pond, a junior from Smoky Hill High School, Aurora. In a unprecedented show of talent, FOUR contestants each solved four and a half problems out of five (only Olde Victorian problem 5(b) survived all attempts). Each of them will be awarded FIRST PRIZE. They are Benjamin Coates, a senior student of Mrs. Terry Sloan from Manitou Springs High School, Aaron Parsons, a senior student of Melvin Oliver from Rangely High School, John Batchelder, a junior student of Dean Rockwell from Columbine High School, and John Crockett, a junior student of John Wicklund from Doherty High School.

Benjamin will receive a Compaq computer, while Aaron and the two Johns will receive each $1,000 scholarship to be used at any certified American university of a four-year college. Each of the four winners will receive a gold medal of the Olympiad, the book Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: The First Ten Years and Further Explorations by Alexander Soifer, and a Hewlett-Packard 48G calculator. Benjamin will also receive three other books by Alexander Soifer as a Creativity Award, for being the only contestant to observe a reduction of problem 3(b) to problem 3(a). Steven Schell, a senior from the class of John Wicklund at Doherty High School has won first prize for the second consecutive year. At the May 17, 1997 Award Presentation Ceremony Steve will receive a gold medal of the Olympiad, Power Macintosh Computer made here in Fountain by SCI Systems, and donated by SCI and Apple Computer, and the book Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: The First Ten Years and Further Explorations by Alexander Soifer.

The winner of this year Olympiad is Steve Schell, a junior from the class of John Wicklund at Doherty High School. At the April 26, 1996 Award Presentation Ceremony Steve will receive first prize, which includes a gold medal, Power Macintosh Computer made here in Fountain, Colorado and donated by Apple Computer, and the book Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: The First Ten Years and Further Explorations by Alexander Soifer.Second prizes will be awarded to two contestants: Daniel Wright, a senior from Palmer High School and Linda Lin from Fort Collins High School. Each of them will receive a silver medal, a $650 scholarship, Texas Instruments valuable TI-92 super calculator, and the Olympiad book by A. Soifer. Linda will also receive a collector’s Cray Computer paper weight with a gallium chip inside. We present it to her as the only contestant to substantially advance in the solution of the most difficult problem “So Close, Faraway!” (so much for a thesis that girls do not make fine mathematicians!):

Travis has become the winner of the Olympiad for the second straight year. He is a sophomore from a class of Mrs. Tammy Maculus at Bear Creak High School. At the May 5, 1995 Award Presentation Ceremony Travis will receive first prize, which includes a gold medal, $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator with an infrared printer, a book Colorado Springs – Newport of the Rockies by ……. and City and Olympiad memorabilia.

Second year in the row second prize will be awarded to Scott Mayer, a junior from a class of Kevin Follet at Fort Collins High School. He will receive a silver medal, a $300 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, a book by ………… and City and Olympiad memorabilia.

Third prizes will be presented to the following two contestants, both from classes of … Sawtelle at Palmer High School: Mark Friedberg, a sophomore, and Dan Wright, a junior. Each of them will receive a bronze medal, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator and City and Olympiad memorabilia.

The following 25 contestants, two of which are just six-graders, will be awarded first honorable mention: Klaus Georg, a sophmore from Fort Collins High School; Shauwn Peach, a junior from Air Academy High School;

Each of them will receive a Texas Instrument graphing calculator or a Hewlett-Packard scientific calculator, and a book Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: The First Ten Years and Further Explorations by Alexander Soifer and City and Olympiad memorabilia.

In the Olympiad, where the same problems are offered to every participant, from a junior high school student to senior, it is remarkable when a younger student wins. It is especially admirable when the winner is a ninth-grader. The winner of this year Olympiad is the youngest of all eleven years of the competition, a freshman from the class of Mrs. Maculus at Bear Creak High School, Travis Kopp. He solved almost perfectly all problems of the competition, except for the easiest problem 1. At the April 29, 1994 Award Presentation Ceremony Travis will receive first prize, which includes a gold medal, $1,000 scholarship, the set of three autographed books by Alexander Soifer, a $240 Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, a $25 book gift certificate, and University and City memorabilia. He will also receive a creativity award.

Second prizes will be awarded to three contestants: Lawrence J. Smith, a senior from Palmer, Jenifer Wilkes, a sophomore from Liberty, and Scott Mayer, a junior from Fort Collins. Each of them will receive a silver medal, a $300 scholarship, a $240 Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, a $25 book certificate, and University and City memorabilia.

Third prizes will be presented to the following eight participants: Mark Friedberg, a junior, Dan Wright, a sophomore, Steve Shell, a freshman, and Jonah Sheridan – all from Palmer; Ben Tsai, a freshman from Cherry Creek; Matt Baumgart, a junior from Araphahoe; Dave Kast and Kieth Buck, both seniors from Heritage. Each of them will receive a bronze medal, CASIO graphing calculator, and University and City memorabilia

In addition to the above, each of the first, second and third prize winners will receive a new book by Alexander Soifer Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: The First Ten Years and Further Explorations as soon as it will become available in Yune, 1994. They are also invited by General Hoerner to take a tour of NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain.

In the field of 601 participants, first prize was awarded to senior Jon Hsu from a class of Larry Cattell at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood, Colorado. Jon received a gold medal, a $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, an autographed set of my three books, and University and City memorabilia.

Second prizes were awarded to four young mathematicians: Zach Harris from Fruita/Monument, Kevin Landmark from Coronado, Ben Olmstead from Parker Vista Middle School, and Kevin Wiatrowski from Woodland Park. Each of them received a silver medal, a $200 scholarship, my book How Does One Cut a Triangle?, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, and memorabilia from the City and the University. Ben Olmstead, an eighth grader, was also awarded a special prize for creativity.

Third prizes were awarded to three contestants: Mark Friedberg from Palmer, Matt Baumgart from Arapahoe, and Chris Fry from Air Academy. Each of them received a bronze medal, a valuable CASIO overhead graphing scientific calculator, my book, and memorabilia from the City and the University.

First prize was awarded to a senior from a class of George Daniels at Mitchell High School, Dan Hedges. Dan received a gold medal, a $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, an autographed set of my three books, and University and City memorabilia. He also won the special prize for creativity. Dan is currently a student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Chip Summer, a senior from Cheyenne Mountain, won second prize. Chip received a silver medal, a $500 scholarship, an autographed set of my three books, a Hewlett-Packard calculator and memorabilia form the City and the University. Third prizes were awarded to four young mathematicians: Scott Mayer, a freshman from Fort Collins; Angel Kocovski, a senior from Doherty; Lawrence Smith, a sophomore, and Taylor Mohoney, a senior, both from Palmer. Each of them received a bronze medal, a $100 scholarship, a Casio or Texas Instuments scientific calculator, Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics by V. Boltyanski and A. Soifer, a book gift certificate and memorabilia from the City and the University.

Scott Mayer also received the United States Space Foundation creativity award that included a space pen and a year membership in the Foundation.

For the second consecutive year first prize was awarded to a senior from a class of Judy Williamson at Air Academy High School, Matt Kahle. Matt received a gold medal, a $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, an autographed copy of a two-week-old book, Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics by V. Boltyanski and A. Soifer, University and City memorabilia, and a paper weight with a gallium chip from Cray Computer Corporation. Matt is now a student at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. He has been an Olympiad judge for the past two years.

Dan Hedges, a junior from Mitchell, won second prize. Dan received a silver medal, a $500 scholarship, an autographed copy of Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, and memorabilia from the City, the University, and Cray Computer Corporation.

Third prizes were awarded to four young mathematicians: Mike Rauch, a junior from Air Academy; Andre Downer, a junior from Mitchell; Lisa Michaels, a senior from the Colorado Springs School; and Chris Dotur, a sophomore from Douglas County. Each of them received a bronze medal, a $125 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard calculator,

It was a wonderful day for Matt Kahle, a junior from a class of Judy Williamson at Air Academy High School. He won first prize which included a gold medal, a $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, my new book How Does One Cut a Triangle?, and University and City memorabilia. He was also awarded the special prize for creativity.

Second prizes were awarded to Brian Becker, a junior from Coronado; Chris Sprague, a senior from Rampart; and Dan Hedges, a sophomore form Mitchell. Each received a silver medal, a $300 scholarship, a top scientific Hewlett-Packard calculator, the book How Does One Cut a Triangle?, and University and City memorabilia.

Third prizes went to Adam Feder of Fort Collins, Chris Hall of Cheyenne Mountain, Greg Geihsler of Coronado, Scott Burles of Manitou Springs, Tina Tackett of Liberty, and Shawn Ouderkirk of Air Academy. Each of them received a Hewlett-Packard calculator, my book Mathematics as Problem Solving, and UCCS and City memorabilia.

We also awarded 10 fourth prizes, 35 first honorable mentions, and 120 second honorable mentions.

First prize was awarded to Pete Rauch, a senior from the class of Judy Williams at Air Academy High School. He solved over 4 problems out of 5. Pete was the only one out of 636 participants to solve Football for 23. He received a gold medal, a $1,000 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard graphing calculator, my autographed book Mathematics as Problem Solving, and City and Olympiad memorabilia. Following his victory, Pete went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In a 6-way tie, second prizes were awarded to Clark Allred, a senior from Liberty, Scott Burles, a junior form Manitou Springs, Chi-Sun Chui, a senior from Palmer, Eric Nickerson, a senior from Palmer, and Chris Sprague, a junior from Rampart. Each of them received a silver medal, a $250 scholarship, a Hewlett-Packard calculator, my autographed book, and City and Olympiad memorabilia. Special prize for creativity, donated by Bob Penkhus, was awarded to the youngest of the second prize winners, a ninth grader, Mike Rauch, a brother of the first prize winner, Pete Rauch.

In a 5-way tie, third prizes were awarded to Greg Geihsler, a sophomore from Coronado, Dan Hedges, from Irving Junior High, Dennis Hwang, a junior from Palmer, Clay Kunz, a sophomore from Wasson, and Eric Olson, a senior from Air Academy. Each of them received a bronze medal, a Hewlett-Packard scientific calculator, my autographed book, a $25 book certificate, and City and Olympiad memorabilia. The United States Space Command Award, donated by the USSC Chief Scientist Dr. David Finkleman, was awarded to the youngest of the second prize winners, a ninth grader, Dan Hedges.

First prize winners, David and Gideon, each were awarded a gold medal and a $1,000 scholarship.

Erik Olson, an Air Academy junior, and Chris Hall, a sophomore at Cheyenne Mountain, shared second prize. Each of them received a silver medal, a $500 scholarship, and a Hewlett- Packard calculator.

Third prize winners were Michael Eamon, an Air Academy senior who shared first prize the year before, and Matt Kahle, an Air Academy freshman.

This year we had the first tie for the victory. First prizes were awarded to David Hunter (his second victory in a row!), now a junior from Victor Kuklin’s class at Palmer High School, and to Michael Eamon, a junior from Judy Williamson’s class at Air Academy High School. Each of them received a gold medal, a $2,000 scholarship for the International Summer Institute, and a Hewlett-Packard calculator.

Second prizes were awarded to Debbie Allison, a senior from Longmont, and to Patric Harlan from Rampart High School. They received silver medals, calculators, and books.

Third prizes were awarded to Gideon Yaffe from Colorado Springs School, Michael Lanker from Doherty High School, and three students from the class of Mr. Proctor at Woodland Park High School: Erik Wiener, Paul Simmons and Mark Ruth. These and other youngsters from a mountain town of Woodland Park showed a lot of perseverance. They were seventh graders when they first came to the Olympiad. Their third participation was a charm!

And the winner was David Hunter, already a sophomore at Palmer High School in the class of Victor Kuklin. He received first prize: a scholarship for a three-week International Summer Institute in South Hampton, Long Island, New York. There David attended lectures by famous scientists, Nobel Laureates, and my problem solving course. Among his 4 solved problems (4 , to be precise) there was the only solution of problem 5. This brought David the special prize for creativity sponsored annually by Robert Penkhus.

Three second prize winners received each a $300 scholarship and a scientific calculator by Hewlett-Packard. They and their schools were Ronald Wright, Manitou; David Coufal, Mitchell; and Rhett Rodewald, St. Mary’s. Ron and Rhet also participated in the International Summer Institute in South Hampton.

Students who won third prize were Gideon Yaffe, The Colorado Springs School; Scott Johnson, Mitchell; and Pete Rauch, Air Academy. They each received a Hewlett-Packard calculator.

In the First Olympiad Richard Wolniewicz received first honorable mention. This time the Air Academy High School senior from the class of Judy Williamson won first prize, which included a $600 scholarship and a computer by Radio Shack.

Second prize was awarded to a junior high school (!) student, a ninth grader, David Hunter, who received a $400 scholarship and books on mathematics donated by several judges. He submitted perfect solutions for the first four problems. Do not forget his name: you will see it in the next three chapters as well!

Three students were awarded third prizes: Tim Wood, a senior at Air Academy; Christopher Pounds, a Wasson junior; and Irving ninth-grader Bill Beltz were each awarded a Hewlett-Packard calculator and University and City memorabilia.

Fourth-prize awards went to Phil Herre, a Doherty senior; Tom Jones, a Doherty junior; Robert Lunday, a Calhan junior; Joe Hastings, a Cheyenne junior; Dave Coufal, a sophomore at Mitchell; and Mark Ruth, a Woodland Park ninth-grader.

Russel Shaffer on May 4, 1984, Russel received first prize that included a $1,000 scholarship and a pocket computer.

Sharing second prize honors were juniors John Williams, Palmer High School;

Martin Puryear, Cheyenne Mountain High School; Chris Ford, Air Academy High School; and sophomore Scott Johnson, Mitchell High School.

Each of them was awarded a $250 scholarship and a scientific calculator.
